Which is the Strongest Magnet?

We carried out an investigation to see which of four different types of magnet was strongest. Teacher asked us for ideas on how we could find out which was the strongest magnet. We had lots of different ideas. We decided to test the four magnets by seeing which would hold the most paper clips.

First, we made some predictions....

...then we started investigating. We had to make sure that the test was fair, because some of the magnets were bigger than others. We linked the paper clips together and only stuck them to each magnet at one point.

Here are our predictions and results:

We decided to make a bar chart of our results. It was really useful because it allowed us to see very clearly which magnet was the strongest.

Rocket Launch

Room 14 had our own stall at the Science Fair . Our experiment was called Rocket Launch .

Have you ever noticed what happens if you let the air out of a balloon? The air goes one way and the balloon moves the other. Rockets work in much the same way . Gases coming out of the engine push the rocket forward.

We put a string through a drinking straw and tied the two ends of the string to stools to pull it tight.

We blew up a long balloon using a balloon pump.
We kept the air in the balloon using a clothes peg.
We used sellotape to attach the balloon to the side of a straw.

We took off the peg to let the air fly out of the balloon, pushing it forward along the string.

Science Fair!

This week is Science Week in Scoil Mhuire . We started off the week with a Science Fair in the school hall. Every class in the school had their own stand . We all went down to the hall to look at the different experiments . It was brilliant . We learned lots of interesting things and we had lots of fun.

Here are a few of the stands that were at the fair:

Chromatocraphy

Static Electricity

Gravity- What makes the best parachute?

Mirror Writing

Gravity- Investigating Slopes

Lava Lamps!

String Telephones

Making a lighthouse

Investigating magnets

Rocket Art

We learned how to draw a rocket. We painted our rockets and when they were dry we used glitter to look like sparks coming from the end of the rocket.

What does a scientist look like?

We are getting ready for Science Week next week. We will be having a Science Fair in the hall on Monday. We drew these pictures of what we think a scientist looks like:
